ASUS UEFI vBIOS tool for Radeon 7000 series cards! It's Here!

X-ROG
Level 15
Hi Everyone,

The tool is finally here. Please find your Radeon card from this link: http://support.asus.com/download/ModelList.aspx?SLanguage=en&keyword=HD&type=1

This bit is critical:
* You will be UNABLE to flash back to the original legacy-only BIOS. HOWEVER, the new GOP UEFI BIOS is actually a Hybrid BIOS. It includes the legacy one as well as the UEFI one. But...
* We are only able to qualify its use ASUS motherboards: that includes those with UEFI BIOS' and those with older legacy BIOS' (we've checked on boards up to ~4 years ago). Other motherboards might work with our UEFI graphics cards but we cannot officially endorse compatibility as we don't have access to all BIOS and board revisions. The software checks if your motherboard is compatible.
* (If you intend to sell-on your card to fund a future upgrade, since you can't flash back, remember this decision affects the next person you sell to)

FAQ:

Do you need this GOP UEFI update?
If you want to use Win 8 Fast Boot, then yet, otherwise no. Do not upgrade if you don't need to. (If it works, don't fix it )

What factors do you need to get Win 8 Fast Boot running?
Only these motherboards listed below support Win 8 Fast Boot, due to a major, ground-up re-write to make the UEFI spec compatible with the Win function (this doesn't just affect ASUS motherboards FYI).

- All Intel 7 Series
- Upcoming Intel 8 Series
- Intel X79 Series updated to Win8 BIOS (3xxx)
- Intel H61 Series R2.0 or later
- All AMD R2.0 Series or later

THE SOFTWARE WILL CHECK IF YOUR BOARD IS COMPATIBLE.

Despite others being 'UEFI' boards (P67, Z68 etc) they are not compatible with Win 8 Fast Boot even after you update to GOP UEFI on your graphics card.

So, it's a Hybrid BIOS? Does that mean if I plan to upgrade my motherboard and OS to Win 8 later I can still update my GPU BIOS now?
As long as you own an ASUS board, sure. Upgrading the GPU now in preparation will still allow it to fall-back to legacy mode on your ASUS motherboard for the time being. You should see no change in the way it functions or performs. We still encourage the 'if it's not broke, don't fix it' though.

You will need:

Windows 8
UEFI compatible motherboard
GTX 600 or Radeon 7000 series graphics card
NOT OVERCLOCKED SYSTEM - DON'T RISK IT! Take normal BIOS flashing precautions.
If you run an CrossFire/SLI system, our advise is that you install 1 card at a time for this process.

Thanks for your patience everyone!

I recently did the bios update for both HD7850-DC2-2GD5-V2 cards, and the update worked flawlessly on each card. The update also fixed a problem I had had with the cards since I got them in January 2013, where the the driver would crash when alt tabbing out of games like Mass Effect 3, and various other games. It even fixed a stuttering/micro stuttering issue with Diablo 3. I also saw an issue where the display driver would crash at random while gaming fixed with this bios update.

Knowing this, I should have did this update in June/July when this new bios came out while the cards were on my P55 board in preparation for my Z87 Deluxe board, rather than wait as long as I did.

Well!

Thanks to Nodens, i managed to update my card (HD7970). It's fully functionnal (secure boot, fast boot) even if GOP section in bios still displays Unknow GOP Firmware nor Driver...

I just use the patched exe provided by Nodens in the GTX600 series card thread. And I followed his instructions!

I'm so happy 🙂

Have a nice journey!

I just noticed that the VBIOS update tool was added to the regular support download page for my video card (HD7870-DC2-2GD5)! So, of course I tried it out... Unfortunately, it failed with a download failure... 😞

First, it tries to download http://liveupdate01.asus.com/pub/ASUS/LiveUpdate/Release/AMD/6818/681842f.txt, which succeeds and is the following text file:

[113-AD43800-102]
NewVersion = 6818HB.15.32.0.0.AS05
NewOEM = 113-AD43800-204
Size = 128
Priority = 2
Checksum = 16710906
UEFISupport = 1
DriverVersion = 2

After that, it tries to download http://liveupdate01.asus.com/pub/ASUS/LiveUpdate/Release/AMD/6818/.txt (note: just ".txt"), and this does not succeed: the web server returns a "404 Not Found" error.

Did anybody succeed in using the newly posted utility to update a HD7870?

(Oh, and this is what the tool says when you click "Cancel":

HD7870-DC2O-2GD56818.15.15.0.2.AS01)

For me it's the same as joskam.

Mobo: Asus P8Z77-V, latest BIOS (2104). Video card: Asus HD7870-DC2-2GD5. When I launch ASUSUEFI motherboard check passes, but when it comes to the video card the infamous "VBIOS download failure - contact Asustek" appears.

Please note that the ASUSUEFI update tool was added and appears in the support page of my video card on the Asus web site, so I expect that a VBIOS is indeed available for this card.

Anyone managed to update this card successfully?

EDIT: I also noticed that if I try to launch the update again WITHOUT quitting ASUSUEFI first, the motherboard check fails. If I want to retry I must exit ASUSUEFI and re-launch it. Sounds like a bug, but at this point it doesn't really matter...

In the meantime I've openen a support ticket with Asus support, to ask for the UEFI vBIOS update for my card (HD7870-DC2-2GD5). Unfortunately, they came back with the answer that it's only available for system integrators so it's expected that the publically available tool doesn't work. I'm not too happy with their answer.

Isn't their anyone here who can provide a BIOS file for my card? I would be quite grateful...

Any luck with HD7950-DC2-3GD5-V2? The utility shows it is supported, but motherboard says video card doesn't support EFI and turns on CMS.

MOBO: ASUS M5A97 R2.02501
VGA: HD7850-DC2-2GD56819.15.17.0.1.AS07

Tool check's MB - OK, after it says that need to connect to server (Graphics card check):
*If i press OK, tool says - the graphic card does not support UEFI. Please contact with ASUSTek.
*If i press cancel, tool shows all MOBO/VGA info/versions, and says - Please update the VBIOS for UEFI system!

Any idea what could be wrong?? I seen on page 2, that people with same VGA successfully updated VBIOS!!
Also, regarding post about techpowerup and manual updating - i FOUND VBIOS for my VGA there, but it's same stock VBIOS that my VGA have now!
Could someone help, or at least send me VBIOS with UEFI GOP support so i can update it manually?
Thank you!
