ASUS ROG STRIX Radeon RX 470 4GB OC Edition

To accommodate adding a new Samsung U28E590D 4K monitor, I am upgrading the two Sapphire Radeon H 6870 Flex graphics cards in my home machine (based on Asus P8Z68V/Gen3 motherboard), and am considering a pair of ASUS ROG STRIX Radeon RX 470 4GB OC Edition cards. The six 1080P monitors presently on the system are connected directly to the 2 DVI / 1 HMDI outputs on the 6870's (no adapters and not using Eyefinity, just the W7 resolution utility). I am under the impression that the Sapphire Flex technology allows use of the two DVI ports and the HDMI port simultaneously so my first question is: Will the ASUS ROG STRIX Radeon RX 470 4GB OC Edition allow use of the two DVI ports and the HDMI port simultaneously for attachment of the six 1080P monitors? If yes, then it would seem reasonable to proceed with install of the two ASUS ROG STRIX Radeon RX 470 4GB OC Edition cards, attachment of the 4K monitor to the DP port on one of the Strix cards, and expect full 3840 X 2160 / 60 fps from the 4K monitor. Thanks for any helpful insight.

Hi Tallman

You could connect six monitors to two RX 470's, 2 with DVI, 2 with HDMI and 2 with displayport.

As for running games in 4k I think two rx 470's in sli would struggle to hit 60 FPS and 4GB of Vram is likely not enough for most games, once the 4GB of vram is used up performance will suffer greatly.

Expecting to much from those GPU's, you can use them all but your not going to game at 60fps at 4K resolution

Nate152: Your response confirms my understanding of the "original" ATI/AMD multi-monitor technology (described in this 2012 video "https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jf0X0lNFmgw", i.e., you can have no more than two "legacy" (non-displayport) connections on an AMD graphics card. Additional connections must be displayport. So, there is no way to connect seven monitors, (the six 1080P's I have presently plus the new 4K monitor I have on order), to a pair of Rx470's since each Rx470 will only accommodate two "legacy" connections (DVI/HDMI) and will require the third "legacy" connection to be made to the Rx470's displayport with an "active adapter" leaving no way to connect the displayport-enabled 4K monitor to the Rx470. Seems my best option would be something like the Strix Rx480 8GB with 1xDVI, 2xHDMI, and 2xDP. I connect one 1080P monitor to the DVI output on each card, one 1080P monitor to the HDMI output on each card, and one 1080P monitor through an "active adapter" to one of the displayport outputs on each card. When the 4K monitor arrives, I connect it to the unused displayport connector on either Rx480 8GB and I have my seven monitor setup.
Menthol: Hopefully the Rx480 8GB will provide enough horsepower to support 60 FPS on the 4k monitor.

If you're willing to compromise on the eye candy and probably ALOT, then 60FPS should be doable at 4K.

Two RX 480's in crossfire has about the same performance as two gtx 970's in sli and is still not enough to hit 60 FPS in 4K.
