X870E-E and EXPO Profiles: BSOD, Windows crashes.

Hello, I recently built my PC with the following hardware:

  • ROG Strix X870E-E
  • ROG Strix GeForce RTX 4070 Ti SUPER 16GB GDDR6X OC Edition
  • AMD 9900X
  • DOMINATOR® TITANIUM RGB 64GB (2x32GB) DDR5 DRAM 6000MT/s (CMP64GX5M2B6000Z30)

Everything has gone relatively well; however, I’ve encountered several issues that I’ve linked to the EXPO profiles (the memory modules are included in the QVL).

What’s happening? When I put the PC under demanding loads, it triggers various BSODs, such as:

  • SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED
  • PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA
  • And others.

Initially, I thought the RAM modules were the problem, so I requested a replacement, but the issue persists. I’ve already tried clearing the CMOS, and while everything seems fine at first, the issue eventually reappears. I’ve tested both EXPO I and EXPO II profiles, but in both cases, the problems occur. The only way to achieve stability is by running the memory without an EXPO profile (at 4800MT/s), but I’d like to enable them. I’m using the latest BIOS version (0706), but the issue remains unresolved.

Even when testing with MemTest86, the behavior is the same: no issues without EXPO, but sporadic errors with EXPO. Similarly, when testing with OCCT, I encounter multiple persistent errors with EXPO enabled, while no errors occur with EXPO disabled.

Here’s the minidump for reference. I believe the issue is related to the BIOS, and I hope Asus can review and address this soon.

Hello,

I have been having the exact same issue with OCCT errors.  I have not experienced a BSOD though 🤞. I have tried various Bios configs without any luck. It also only happens when EXPO is enabled. There is definitely a flaw somewhere.  Very glad I found this post; if two folks are having the issue then more are bound to as well.

  • Rog Strix Gaming Wife X870e-e : ver. 0706
  • AMD 9900X
  • Asus Tuf 4080 Super OC GDDR6X 16GB
  • G.SKILL Trident Z5 Neo RGB 64GB (2x32GB) DDR5 6000MHz CL30 Black 1.4V UDIMM - Desktop Memory - AMD EXPO (F5-6000J3040G32GX2-TZ5NR)

Please fix this Asus!

Yes! I hope the issue gets fixed in the next BIOS update. Initially, I thought it might be a hardware problem, but now I don't think so.

In the meantime, I currently have the EXPO I profile active, but I’ve lowered the speed to 5600MT, and I’ve been running for several days without any issues. It’s not ideal (6000MT), but it works. 5800MT still generates errors.

This is with a negative curve optimizer set to -10.

Another thing: after making changes to PBO, you always need to force an EXPO training; otherwise, it also causes BSODs.

Hello,

Thank you for the information!  I dialed mine back to 5800 and kept fclk at 2000. It ran with no errors. I also added a curved optimizer and curved shaper using game tech reviews guide on YouTube.  CPU frequencies seem more stable across their each CCD as well. I’m going to do a longer stress test to ensure stability and will report back. Once stable I may try playing with the RAM timings more to try and find stability at 6000.

Awesome! Let me know how your experience goes. I've been running at 5600 for several days now without any issues. I'll wait for a BIOS update to see if it fixes the problem. Otherwise, one day when I have some time, I might start experimenting with tweaking the values.
