USB4 (TB3) external disk very slow write speeds.

So, I've been owning a ROG-Strix X870-F Gaming WiFi motherboard for quite a few months. Now I wanted to add a second NVMe disk and not wanting to go through the hassle of tearing down the PC, especially taking out the expensive 5090 from a motherboard with the infamous Q-Release Slim first revision, I found a very good offer (like 40% off) on this UGreen USB4/TB3 external enclosure, slapped a  Samsung 990 EVO Plus in it and called it a day.

Now I experience really bad performances with it. I've tried everything:

  • Updating firmwares on both the enclosure and the motherboard
  • a different disk in the enclosure (Lexar EQ790)
  • another enclosure (with dual chipset) that I'll return to Amazon, because is even slower and double the price of the first one.

This is the situation:

Now the same enclosure/disk combo works like a charm on my 2023 Mac Mini:

And finally, I get better (at least, more consistent between read and write and in line with what to expect from a 10Gbps port) speeds when connecting the enclosure to the 10Gbps USB-C port than any of the two 40Gbps ones:

What's wrong? I've tried fiddling with the BIOS USB4 settings in AMD PBS->USB4 (ASM4242 Controller), but nothing changes and maxing the settings just brick the system until a CMOS reset.

i have the same board, im using a sam 9100 pro 4tb in slot 1 and a 2tb 980 pro in slot 4. im getting great speeds on 980 pro- really close to max advertised speed. the gpu is handy enough to take out , just undo 2 retaining screws and gpu will come straight out. the dock you are using might be bottlenecking the speed because the cables dont support usb4 . it clearly says on the site that you need the higher bandwith cables to get maximum speeds. Screenshot 2025-10-20 062829.png

Well, seems like the problem was Windows, provided the same drive/enclosure combo works fine in Linux (Ubuntu), that has always been the intended OS I wanted to use this disk for, so problem solved for me.
