USB only glitch stuck reconnects CROSSHAIR  X870E HERO

Hi

Any help would be appreciated ,  Experiencing  USB instability / stuck ports / devices which need a port restart to resume normal operational after power on or few minutes after power on.     Currently on BIOS 0706.

It happens with or without EXPO ... and even after full CMOS RESET etc...
It happens across all ports no matter where i attach the device (i.e even if attached to my 2080ti ! or to the MB bios usb port)...

It seems to be triggering some port/bus glitch where ONLY certain devices get stuck and need me to detach/attach or go into usbTree and choose PortRestart ....

Devices that trigger the issues and also get impacted/effected in prallel if attached ......
are my samsung s24 usbc ,  my steelseries 7+ USBc Dongle (even when using the normal usb cable extender that comes with it)   ,  AND the storage USB stick that comes in the Asus MotherBoard (drivers CD/pendrive)  itself apparently only when connected to a specific front panel port  though so this one could be a different issue still it causes the same out come  ...
Finally the Thermaltake  usb1.1   AIO round screen and the Thermltake 3.9" candy bar usb1.1 screen.  --> These are attached to the onboard usb5 headers of the HERO

Devices not impacted seem to be ... 1 Corsair HeadphoneRGB Stand  and my Logitiec Mouse/Keyboard usb RF dongle attached to it or ANYwhere else actually 🙂 .....  2 GameSir    USB 2.4G  wireless dongles  ....   (unless they simply are reconnecting automatically after the glitch occours so quickly i dont notice)

Workaround is to eventually use usbTree to reset port or physically reconnecting them at least once after power on after issue occours.
The system remains stable and no other anomalies noticed ...

Tried usb no power down/no power savings across all of them in device manager and power plans .... tried disconnected the usb5 headers from motherboard towards the Thermaltakes  USB1.1 screens .... tried  disconnecting two of the 4 usb3.0 headers between Case and Motherboard .... tried full cmos reset  , tried  both AMD and Asus chipset drivers ... tried disabling outright the USB4 ASMEDIA from AMD PBS bios ....

Can any one provide some insight / support ?

I plan to proceed  with the new chipset driver .... then give the beta bios a shot later after work today  https://rog-forum.asus.com/t5/amd-600-series/x670-x870-resource-thread/td-p/901576/highlight/true/pa...

Hi....

Have you tried to update the usb firmware on the board, there are 2 updates for the Crosshair x870e hero...

Hi...

I would update to bios 1001 and see if that improves things, bios 0606 and 0706 were terrible for me...

another long shot are you using the latest drivers ?

https://rog-forum.asus.com/t5/hardware-build-advice/index-all-my-drivers-firmware-software-threads/m...

Regards

yes i am on 1001 ... all good so far ... seems more stable and good performance .. am on expo II and also expo tweaked both where fine.... but usb issue where after some time the wireless headphones drop out or the thermaltake 3.9 screen is seen as a different/new device loosing its settings ... or the the rgb on a ram stick goes off out of sync    until i perform a usb port reset still happens once shortly after startup ...    It feels like something related to how usb's  handle different device power states or something is mis handled ...

as to your other suggestions  via the link  ....  THANKS 🙂  i see some other stuff to try out tonight ...

https://rog-forum.asus.com/t5/downloads-for-motherboards/drivers-amd-npu-8xxx-9xxx-cpu/m-p/1009422
1) i see chipset legacy  vs non legacy ... i have tried latest both on official website for the 1001 bios and the legacy ones on AMD site ..

2) i skipped drivers as i have them disabled in BIOS for    usb sound + onboard iGPU + SATA & RAID .  (not used)

3) NPU i have not tried ... will try this: 🙂

4) USB4 asmedia was the one i was very hopefull about yesterday ... but   when i use it for the usb4 root hub i end up with 2 pci express devices showing an error about unable to power up 😕 ......    while the ITE UCM Driver : 1.3.8.18 WHQL [10/07/2024]  is installed fine yes . The other i think are not present on the motherboard .

ASMedia USB4 Drivers (Drivers Only) :

Drivers : 1.0.0.0 WHQL [12/12/2023]  (base usb4 root hub when dirver manually chosen ends up with 2 pci express downstreams showing unable to start up ... )
Cypress UCM Driver : 1.2.1.88 WHQL [07/07/2022] (?)
ITE UCM Driver : 1.3.8.18 WHQL [10/07/2024]  (OK )
Realtek UCM Driver : 10.0.26100.117 WHQL [18/09/2024] (not present ?)

Texas Instruments UCM Driver : 1.0.10.10 WHQL [27/01/2023]   (Not present ?)

Hi....

with bios 1001 you will need to install amd chipset drivers version :7.01.08.129 WHQL

as for the asmedia usb drivers, the ucm drivers are required to manage the connection,

Please see the below for the description:

  • USB connector manager

Microsoft provides a UCSI in-box driver with Windows (UcmUcsiCx.sys) that implements the features defined in the USB Type-C Connector System Software Interface Specification. The specification describes the capabilities of UCSI and explains the registers and data structures, for hardware component designers, system builders, and device driver developers.

This driver is intended for systems with embedded controllers. This driver is a client to the Microsoft-provided USB connector manager class extension driver (Ucmcx.sys). The driver handles tasks such as initiating a request to the firmware to change the data or power roles and getting information needed to provide troubleshooting messages to the user.

so far nothing seems to solve it .... however many times its just a matter of requesting a usbTree port reset or unplug/plug the usb device impacted ..... i doubt its a problem of hardware as all ports and hub ports can be impacted randomly (tried 3 different old and new hubs) and tried all motherboard usb connectors be then usb2/3/4 ....

Im wondering if i should try to disconnect all (2 or 3) ARGB headers connected to the Thermaltake Fans ..... i wonder if the ARGB could somehow cause random instability across the entire USB plane ...

Hi,

as you say, may be worth disconnecting all your hardware, and connecting everything one by one (including your argb)...

as argb and usb both use 5.0 volts, so there may be some imbalance somewhere....

nope did not effect it ....

The only other things I can suggest is to try and use a powered usb hub

And contact Asus support and see if they can offer a solution....
