Trouble with audio X870e Hero

rckrz6
Level 8

The audio on this board seems to be completely bugged with stereo mode selected in the audio console. (I have not tried other outputs thoroughly as I only have stereo speakers.) I first noticed this while playing ARMA 3. Any kind of directional sound coming from behind me was completely mute, until I turned around and looked almost directly at the source (e.g., gunfire, voice). I then tried my external USB DAC with my headphones, and there was no issue with the audio. I thought maybe it was just something buggy with the game, but I had the same issue with ARMA Reforger when I selected "speakers" for stereo processing mode in the game settings. Again, I tried my external DAC, and there was no issue with the sound.

Just today, I downloaded Sniper Elite: Resistance, and the audio coming from behind my player is super faint—like you can barely hear it. Again, using my external DAC, there was no issue. Not every game seems affected. I tried Call of Duty and a mix of Unreal Engine games that seem to work fine. I've tried the audio drivers on the product support page and also the updated ones that MoKiChU posted, but it made no difference. I tried a whole new Hero board just for the hell of it, but I still have the same issues. I even tried a Gigabyte X870E Master, which uses the ALC1220 codec instead of the ALC4802, and had no issues with the sound.

The only workarounds I have found so far are disabling audio enhancements in the sound settings (Windows)—which completely fixes the issue, but I don't really know the downside to disabling it—or setting my speakers to 5.1 in the audio console and unchecking the rear speaker and center speaker. That also fixes the issue. To me, it kind of feels like the audio is stuck in 5.1 mode (even with stereo selected) and isn't downsampling to stereo correctly. I really like this board, and I just want the audio to work correctly. I am using line out on the back of the board with a 3.5mm jack and spatial audio off.
