Title:
ROG STRIX X870E-E GAMING WIFI – "Unknown USB Device (Device Descriptor Request Failed)" persists despite BIOS reflash and latest AMD drivers

Hello everyone,

I’m facing a strange USB issue with my ROG STRIX X870E-E GAMING WIFI.
The system ran perfectly stable for over 8 months, but suddenly Windows permanently shows this entry:

Unknown USB Device (Device Descriptor Request Failed)
USB\VID_0000&PID_0003
Driver: usb.inf – BADDEVICE.Dev.NT

System information:

  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D

  • GPU: ASUS Prime Radeon RX 9070 XT OC Edition – 16 GB

  • Mainboard: ASUS ROG Strix X870E-E Gaming WiFi

  • RAM: G.SKILL Trident Z5 NEO RGB – 64 GB DDR5 (AMD EXPO)

  • SSD: Samsung 990 PRO – 4 TB + 16 TB

  • PSU: be quiet! Dark Power 13 – 1000W, 80 Plus Titanium

  • Case: be quiet! Silent Base 802 – Black

  • Cooling: ARCTIC Liquid Freezer III Pro – 360 mm AIO

  • Monitor 1: ASUS ROG Swift OLED PG32UCDMZ – 32", 4K, 240 Hz

  • Monitor 2: LG 27" UHD 4K, 60 Hz, HDR10 DisplayHDR 400

  • Mouse: Logitech PRO X Superlight 2

  • Keyboard: Razer BlackWidow V4 Tenkeyless HyperSpeed

  • Headset: Razer BlackShark V3 Pro

  • Windows 11 Pro 23H2 (Build 26100.6899)

  • AMD Chipset Driver: Version 7.06.24.2226

  • BIOS Version: 2002 (reflashed, includes USB compatibility fix)

Issue description:

The error appears right after boot, even when no devices are connected.
It always refers to the AMD USB 3.20 Root Hub (not ASMedia).
All other USB devices work perfectly.
Only the 8BitDo Ultimate 2.4 GHz Dongle fails to initialize on any port.
The same controller works fine over cable.
The same dongle works instantly on another PC, so it is not defective.

Device Manager shows:
Driver Name: usb.inf
Driver Section: BADDEVICE.Dev.NT
Matching Device ID: USB\CONFIG_DESCRIPTOR_FAILURE

Already tested:

  • Reflashed BIOS 2002

  • CMOS reset and power drain (PSU unplugged, Power button 15s)

  • Reinstalled AMD chipset drivers

  • Disconnected all front USB headers

  • Removed Logitech and Razer software

  • Reinstalled Windows 11 from scratch

  • Tested 8BitDo dongle on all ports (rear and front)

  • Error persists even with no devices connected

Additional notes:

The issue started right after a Logitech or Razer driver update.
Since then, a “phantom” USB device appears in Device Manager.
Reflashing BIOS and reinstalling drivers did not change anything.
Other users with X870E boards (Tomahawk, Nova, Strix etc.) reported the same issue in September/October 2025.
Likely cause: Firmware or AGESA bug in the AMD USB controller.

Event Viewer log:

Device USB\VID_0000&PID_0003\8&15cd6c09&0&9 was configured.
Driver Name: usb.inf
Driver Version: 10.0.26100.6899
Driver Section: BADDEVICE.Dev.NT
Matching Device ID: USB\CONFIG_DESCRIPTOR_FAILURE
Driver Provider: Microsoft
Parent Device: USB\ROOT_HUB30\7&1c44d799&0&0

My conclusion:

Since BIOS and chipset drivers are up to date,
the error occurs even with no connected devices,
and the dongle works fine on other PCs,
this looks like a firmware or AGESA bug, or an EC latch on the USB Root Hub.

Questions for ASUS or the community:

  1. Are there known USB issues with the X870E-E and HID dongles (8BitDo, Razer, Logitech)?

  2. Will the next BIOS version (AGESA 1.2.0.C or later) include a fix for this “Descriptor Request Failed” issue?

  3. If not fixable via firmware, could this be an RMA case?

Summary:

  • BIOS and drivers up to date

  • Error persists with no devices connected

  • All other devices work fine

  • Only 8BitDo dongle not recognized

  • Likely cause: Firmware or root hub issue

  • Expected fix: BIOS update or ASUS response

Thank you in advance.
I hope ASUS support or another X870E owner can confirm whether this behavior is known or already reported to AMD.

Hi,

You are probably missing your UCM Drivers (contained in the ASMedia USB4 Drivers package, however know that the ASMedia USB4 Driver itself is installed but is not used for Windows 11, only the UCM Drivers are required and used, depending on the brand of your UCM device), so :

You need to install your ASMedia USB4 Drivers :

[DRIVERS] ASMedia USB4

Also for reference, you need these drivers for your ASUS ROG Strix X870E-E Gaming WiFi motherboard (you don't need AMD iGPU Drivers if you disabled/don't enabled it in your BIOS) :

[DRIVERS] AMD Chipset/RAID (3xx/4xx/5xx/6xx/8xx)

- AMD Chipset Drivers

[DRIVERS] ASMedia USB4

[DRIVERS] Realtek Ethernet/WiFi/Bluetooth

- Realtek Ethernet Drivers (Drivers Only) :

Drivers - 5GbE

[DRIVERS] Qualcomm Ethernet/WiFi/Bluetooth

- Qualcomm WiFi Drivers (Drivers Only) :

Drivers - FastConnect 7800 (NCM8xx)

- Qualcomm Bluetooth Drivers (Drivers Only) :

Drivers - FastConnect 7800 (NCM8xx)

[DRIVERS] AMD|MediaTek WiFi/Bluetooth (instead of Qualcomm WiFi/Bluetooth according to motherboard revision)

- AMD|MediaTek WiFi Drivers (Drivers Only) :

Drivers - RZ7xx (MT7925/MT7927)

- AMD|MediaTek Bluetooth Drivers (Drivers Only) :

Drivers - RZ7xx (MT7925/MT7927)

[DRIVERS] Realtek USB Audio (AMD 5xx/6xx/8xx & Intel 5xx/6xx/7xx/8xx)

Realtek USB Audio Drivers (UAD - ASUS ROG RTK-Dolby)

[DRIVERS] AMD iGPU/GPU (Ryzen CPU/APU & Radeon 5x00/6x00/7x00/90xx GPU)

I also recommend updating the firmware of the onboard components (you can find these on the same page as the BIOS updates)
