Title:
️ROG STRIX X870E-E GAMING WIFI – "Unknown USB Device (Device Descriptor Request Failed)" persists despite BIOS reflash & latest AMD drivers

Hello everyone,

I’m currently facing a strange USB issue with my ROG STRIX X870E-E GAMING WIFI.
The system ran perfectly stable for over 8 months, but now Windows permanently shows this entry:

Unknown USB Device (Device Descriptor Request Failed)
USB\VID_0000&PID_0003
Driver: usb.inf – BADDEVICE.Dev.NT

🧩 System Information:

 • 🧠 CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D

 • 🎮 GPU: ASUS Prime Radeon RX 9070 XT OC Edition – 16 GB

 • 🧩 Mainboard: ASUS ROG Strix X870E-E Gaming WiFi

 • RAM: G.SKILL Trident Z5 NEO RGB – 64 GB DDR5 (AMD EXPO)

 • 💽 SSD: Samsung 990 PRO – 4 TB + 16 TB

 • 🔌 PSU: be quiet! Dark Power 13 – 1000W, 80 Plus Titanium

 • 🖥Case: be quiet! Silent Base 802 – Black

 • ❄️ Cooling: ARCTIC Liquid Freezer III Pro – 360 mm AIO

 • 🖥Monitor 1: ASUS ROG Swift OLED PG32UCDMZ – 32", 4K, 240 Hz

 • 🖥Monitor 2: LG 27" UHD 4K, 60 Hz, HDR10 DisplayHDR 400

 • 🖱Mouse: Logitech PRO X Superlight 2

 • ⌨️ Keyboard: Razer BlackWidow V4 Tenkeyless HyperSpeed

 • 🎧 Headset: Razer BlackShark V3 Pro

 • Windows: 11 Pro 23H2 (Build 26100.6899)

 • AMD Chipset Driver: v7.06.24.2226

 • BIOS Version: 2002 (reflashed, includes USB compatibility fix)

⚙️ Issue Description:

 • The error appears right after boot, even when no devices are connected.

 • It always refers to the AMD USB 3.20 Root Hub (not ASMedia).

 • All other USB devices work perfectly.

 • Only the 8BitDo Ultimate 2.4 GHz Dongle fails to initialize – regardless of port.

 • Controller works fine via cable connection.

 • The same dongle works instantly on another PC → not a dongle defect.

Device Manager shows:

Driver Name: usb.inf
Driver Section: BADDEVICE.Dev.NT
Matching Device ID: USB\CONFIG_DESCRIPTOR_FAILURE

Already Tested:

 • Reflashed BIOS 2002 (EZ Flash)

 • CMOS reset & power drain (power button 15s, PSU unplugged)

 • Reinstalled AMD Chipset Driver v7.06

 • Disconnected all front USB headers

 • Removed Logitech / Razer software

 • Reinstalled Windows 11 from scratch

 • Tested 8BitDo dongle on all ports (rear & front)

 • Error persists even with an empty system

🧠 Additional Notes:

 • Issue started right after a Logitech/Razer driver update.

 • Since then, a "phantom" USB device remains in Device Manager.

 • BIOS reflash & chipset driver reinstall did not help.

 • Other users with X870E boards (Tomahawk, Nova, Strix) report identical issues (Sep–Oct 2025).

 • Likely cause: Firmware or AGESA bug in AMD USB controller → root hub stuck in error state.

📜 Event Viewer Log:

Device USB\VID_0000&PID_0003\8&15cd6c09&0&9 was configured.
Driver Name: usb.inf
Driver Version: 10.0.26100.6899
Driver Section: BADDEVICE.Dev.NT
Matching Device ID: USB\CONFIG_DESCRIPTOR_FAILURE
Driver Provider: Microsoft
Parent Device: USB\ROOT_HUB30\7&1c44d799&0&0

💭 My Conclusion:

Since BIOS and chipset drivers are up-to-date,
the error occurs even with no connected devices,
and the dongle works fine on other PCs,
I suspect a firmware/AGESA bug or EC latch in the AMD USB Root Hub.

Questions for ASUS / Community:

 1. Are there known USB issues with the X870E-E and HID dongles (8BitDo, Razer, Logitech)?

 2. Will the next BIOS version (AGESA 1.2.0.C or later) include a fix for these Descriptor Request Failures?

 3. If not fixable via firmware – would this be an RMA case (faulty EC/USB PHY)?

🧾 Summary:

Item Status

BIOS & Drivers up-to-date
Error persists with no devices🔴
Other devices work fine
8BitDo Dongle not detected🔴
Suspected causeFirmware / Root Hub issue
Expected fixBIOS update or ASUS support feedback

Thank you very much 🙏
I would appreciate feedback from ASUS or other X870E owners
to confirm whether this behavior is known or already escalated to AMD.

Subject: Update: Final Diagnostic Results - Persistent USB Code 43 (Hardware Defect suspected)**

Hi everyone,

I wanted to provide a detailed update following extensive troubleshooting over the last few days regarding the persistent **USB Code 43 ("Unknown USB Device - Device Descriptor Request Failed")** on my **ROG Strix X870E-E**.

**Current Status:**
The USB error (Code 43) remains permanently in Device Manager, even when **NO external USB devices** are connected.

**Troubleshooting steps taken:**

1. **Software & Drivers:**
* Performed a **Clean Install** of Windows 11 (24H2).
* Updated to the **latest Chipset Drivers** and **newest BIOS**.
* Uninstalled the USB device in Device Manager multiple times -> It reappears immediately after a reboot.
2. **Hardware Isolation:**
* Disconnected all external peripherals (Mouse, Keyboard, 8BitDo Dock). The "Ghost Device" with Code 43 remains.
* **Internal Headers:** I checked and disconnected internal USB headers (AIO, Front Panel) to rule out an internal short circuit.
* **Power Drain:** Performed a full power cycle (unplugged PSU, held power button for 30s) to drain residual power. The error persists.
3. **System Stability Tests (OCCT):**
* To rule out CPU/GPU instability causing chipset errors, I ran extensive OCCT tests.
* **VRAM Test:** Passed (0 Errors).
* **Power Test:** Stable (after disabling AI Overclocking/EXPO to rule out instability).
* *Result:* My CPU and GPU are healthy. The instability is clearly isolated to the Motherboard/Chipset.

**Conclusion:**
Since the error survives a clean Windows install, a BIOS reset, and persists with no devices attached, it strongly points to a **dead USB Controller on the Chipset** or a physical defect on the board.

Has anyone else with the **X870E-E** experienced this specific "Ghost Device" issue? Unless there is a specific beta BIOS fixing USB initialization, I am assuming this is an **RMA case**.

Thanks for any help!

I have the same issue. Just started today.

New build and the only new software added since the last time it ran without issue was G.Skill Trident Z Lighting Control.
