Rog Strix X870-i m.2 heatsink / daughterboard

Does anyone know if it's possible to completely remove (not use) the m.2 cooling stack, including the daughterboard for the second m.2 port? I've read somewhere that on the x670 itx board you had to have the daughterboard plugged into the mainboard otherwise it wouldn't boot (post?!). Is that true? If so, does that still apply to the X870-i? Ideally I'd like to just have a Gen 5 SSD with it's own heatsink connected to the mainboard and get rid of (put back into the box) the motherboard heatsink and daughterboard.
