ROG Strix X870-I instability, USB issues, no BIOS splash

CPU: Ryzen 9800X3D
MOTHERBOARD: Asus Strix X870-I (BIOS 1078 2025.7.22)
MEMORY: G.SKILL Flare X5 2x48GB DDR5-6000 CL30
GRAPHICS: Zotac 4090 Airo
DRIVES: 990 Pro 2TB & 4TB
PSU: Corsair SF1000
Windows 11

I've been having a lot of stability issues, boot issues, and USB issues with this motherboard since I put this build together. Initially, I thought it was a memory issue, so I RMA'ed my memory twice, but now I suspect it's the motherboard.

USB issues: Occasionally the system will boot, and random USB devices will not be detected. More recently, after some time my USB DAC starts outputting distorted audio, and unplugging/replugging it results in it not being detected. After a reboot, it usually works fine.

Boot issues: Sometimes the system will power on, but no video signal will ever be displayed. Sometimes the system boots in 20 seconds, other times it takes 5 minutes. Recently, it has stopped displaying the BIOS splash screen. I saw it once for a split second, but I've booted at least a hundred times since then and haven't seen it since. I'm occasionally able to get into the BIOS by mashing delete during boot, but this only works 5-10% of the time. This makes getting into the BIOS a time-consuming and frustrating experience.

Instability: The system is quite stable under load. I've run a variety of OCCT stress tests along with prime95, and I haven't been able to cause a crash. In addition, it runs well gaming, and I can play demanding games for hours without issues. At idle is where most crashes occur:

  • Crashing into BIOS: Recently I've often come back to the PC the next day and it's crashed and rather than booting back into Windows, has loaded the BIOS. While I've experienced this behavior with unstable memory, in that case the BIOS will downclock the memory to the base rate. In this case, the BIOS doesn't change anything. I'm usually able to exit the BIOS and boot into Windows as normal.
  • Crashing with no video signal: Sometimes the system crashes at idle and remains powered on with no video signal.
  • Crashing with errors on next boot: Sometimes the system crashes at idle and still has errors after rebooting into Windows, requiring another restart.
    • Most recently, I saw Windows throw errors with LogonUI.exe: The instruction at 0x00007FFBDB... referenced memory at 0x000001AB..... The required data was not placed into memory because of an I/O error status of 0xc000000e.
  • Crashing and outputting video in an unsupported resolution: sometimes the system crashes while at idle, and reboots but outputs a resolution my monitor doesn't recognize.
    • Message from my Dell monitor: "The current input timing is not supported by the monitor display. Please change your input timing to 3840x2160,60Hz or any other monitor listed timing as per the monitor specifications.

Given that none of these issues are reproducible under load, I'm at a loss of what to try. I've seen some other threads listing similar issues with other Asus X870 series boards, so I'm wondering if there are some BIOS issues with certain configurations.

did you install all of your usb firmware like lego and the hubs ect?Screenshot 2025-09-04 012611.png

I'm not sure, but just to be safe I downloaded and ran all three. Middle one indicated it was already installed, and the other two seem to have installed if they weren't already. Thanks for the heads up.

just double check you have all of your other drivers installed and also any updates using armoury crate.

have you you gotten any usb errors since you updated them?

Yeah, still having issues.

I don't use Armory Crate since it's pretty sketchy. I just download and install manually.

ASUS Armoury Crate bug lets attackers get Windows admin privileges

Screenshot 2025-09-04 225323.pngthere are some pretty important updates for the motherboard that are only available via armoury crate. im not surprised you are constantly crashing. regarding the vulnerability that you referenced. that has been patched

I'm pretty sure Armory Crate is not required. If you visit the Asus subreddit, not installing Armory Crate is one of the top recommendations. It has a reputation as bloatware, and that was before the security issues.

You might be on to something though, in that I had previously had Armory Crate installed, but removed it after the vulnerabilities. From what I've read, it's obnoxious to remove, to the point that there's a specific uninstall tool for it. I don't think I used that, and I wonder if that's causing issues.

no skin off my nose pal, trying to help you out. if you wanna carry on as is. then so be it

Appreciate the help. I'm just extra cautious about installing software like Armoury Crate. I've had similar software (Corsair iCue) cause stability issues in the past, so I do my best to avoid them.

Crashed into BIOS again last night. I exited BIOS and PC stayed powered on, but did not boot into Windows. Restarted and it booted into Windows as normal.
