ROG Crosshair X870E Hero - new build - hangs in POST - error Ad - help please

Hi,

hope you guys can help - not quite at tearing hair out stage yet, but before I spend fruitless hours trying to work out what dumbass mistake(s) I've made, I thought I'd get some expert advice...

Hardware
ROG Crosshair X870E Hero
AMD Ryzen 9 7900X Processor
Corsair Dominator Titanium RGB DDR5 32GB (2x16GB) DDR5 6000MHz CL30 AMD EXPO
ZOTAC Gaming GEFORCE RTX 4070 Ti SUPER
Corsair MP700 PRO M.2 PCIe Gen5 x4 NVMe 2.0 SSD
EVGA GQ 1000W PSU
Noctua NH-D15S cooler

Questions \ Issues

1 the 8 pin PCIe power by the main ATX power socket - does this need to have power to it? I've gone through the cables that came with the EVGA PSU - the CPU ones aren't a fit and the others are VGA \ SATA ones. Do I need to get a PCIe power cable? If so, where would it plug in the PSU (the sockets are all labelled - there isn't a PCIe one, just CPU\VGA\SATA\couple of others I don't recall - presumably because it's an older PSU).

2 First boot all good - got into BIOS, had a scan around, set date\time all good. Exit and boot from Windows install USB and we're off - Windows up and running. However... no network devices available. Hmmm. Okay, one for tomorrow...

3 Next day... power on. Expect it to boot to Windows - ends up blank screen. Power off, boot again. Seems to be doing something - Q codes 25 then 26 then 27... oh no, that's it showing temperature - let's reboot and turn temp display off...

4 Reboot with temp display off - get's to blank screen Q code Ad - which I think is trying to pass off to OS start

5 Okay, let's boot from USB and reinstall Windows - that succeeds - Windows running - still no network "no intel adapters are present on this computer" (I think is what it said). I had enabled network stack in BIOS to see if that fixed it.

6 Shutdown Windows - let's see if a reboot helps... back to black screen and Q code Ad

So, what have I done wrong \ missed? Be gentle... I can plug stuff together but not at all expert in all the BIOS settings stuff

Thanks in advance for any assistance

Maybe try reinstalling windows again. This time, only install the LAN driver to get you connected to the internet. Then install the motherboard chipset driver, nothing else.

See how it goes after this.

The drivers on the motherboard disk could be outdated, it may be better to get the latest drivers from the ASUS Support Center.

Ok, progress...

decided to create a new windows installation USB - the one I had was, admittedly, probably from longer ago than I realise.

Anyway, fresh windows install, and this time, when windows started, network connection was available and ASUS Driver Hub sparked up so could do driver updates knowing they're the latest 🙂

I've done a couple of shutdown \ power on and restarts and so far, all good... fingers crossed

Thanks @Nate152 for your help - hopefully I'm sorted now

Oh, ok, for point 1 - the cables with the PSU that are labelled VGA - google suggests that they're the same thing as PCIe - is this correct? Just use a VGA cable?

Hello now_what

Correct, plug the pcie cable into the vga port. The 8-pin pcie power connector is shared to add more wattage for two gpu's and to add more wattage for charging from your case usb-c port.

Ok, so I have found a dumbass mistake - I hadn't noticed the Motherboard Support CD that magically appears and has the ever-so-useful "install drivers". Nothing in the manual with MB mentions this. Network available  🙂

My joy was short lived...

PCIe power plugged in

Booted from USB Windows Installer
Clean install of Windows
Ran the ASUS setup to install drivers - all good - network connection working (and internet access)
Shutdown (to test powering back on before going further)
Power on - back to an Ad error code....

Now the damned thing isn't seeing the USB boot drive - only the SSD is showing in BIOS under boot options. WTF?

Arrgggghhhh!

Set your windows ssd as Boot option 1 and see if it will boot.

If you still need drivers, you can get them at the ASUS Support Center.

Yeah, that's what is set. I have the drivers from the magic Motherboard Support CD 🙂 The magic - it's the USB stick that came in the motherboard box that I hadn't noticed - plug it in and it mounts usb drive and the cd.

The missing USB boot stick - for some reason, it's not working in front USB ports now (it did before) - but it is in the rear...

Anyway, in the rear, I can boot from the USB drive. Windows Installer runs, and I select "repair" and then immediately select "exit and continue to windows" (i.e. don't actually do any repair tasks) it actually boots into the previously installed windows

Stumped again...

For the front case usb ports not working. Shut down your pc and unplug the power supply cable, reconnect the usb cable to the motherboard.

Once windows is installed, you shouldn't need the windows installation usb flash drive.

"Once windows is installed, you shouldn't need the windows installation usb flash drive."

Yeah, agreed - but at the moment, it's the only way I can get into the installed windows - boot from USB install and select repair, then exit to windows without doing anything

I'll sort the front usb once I can reliably boot into windows...
