ROG Crosshair x870e Hero Memory compatibility problems, rebooting to postcode 0d

I made a recent build with a ROG Crosshair x870e Hero motherboard and Ryzen 9 9950X CPU.

The initial build was with the 0606 bios but I've since updated to the 0706 bios.

For RAM, I wanted 128GB (I'm a software dev and I sometimes need to run multiple VMs to test my software). There isn't a 4x32GB kit on the QVL but I've had good luck pairing two 2x32GB kits in the past. I didn't expect to run the RAM at full EXPO speeds.

The only 2x32GB EXPO kit available in my area (without ordering it and having it shipped) is the KINGSTON FURY Beast RGB 64GB (KF564C32BWEAK2-64), also not on the QVL.

There are many 2x32GB Kingston kits on the QVL and this kit is listed on Kingston's site as compatible with this motherboard, so I was hoping this would be fine.

And it is fine, generally.

With 4 UDIMMs installed and a lot of testing, I was able to achieve stability with EXPO I enabled running the RAM at 4000MT.

It ran MemTest86 Pro 11.1 through 4 complete test cycles with no issue.

Windows 11 installed with no issue.

Every once in a while, when I reboot, it stops during POST and the postcode "0d" (RAM training error) is displayed. Also, the RGB on one to two of the RAM sticks is not active.

To get around this, I do a CMOS reset, go into the bios, reconfigure the RAM, and it will just work again. Until it doesn't.

Today I got frustrated so I did some more testing. I tried with just two sticks or RAM installed. Surprisingly, it's working even worse.

First I tried enabling EXPO and running at full speed. It was fine with 1 pass on MemTest86. But when I rebooted it would display a "Post Failure" message and tell me to press F1 to go into BIOS settings to reconfigure the RAM.

Even with EXPO turned off it still has problems rebooting, with just two memory sticks installed.

Sometimes it will display the "0d" post code and sometimes it will give me the Post Failure message.

Is there some BIOS setting I might not be aware of that will increase memory compatibility?

Has anyone had luck with a 128GB setup? What about 96GB?

Crucial has 2x48GB and 4x24GB kits on the QVL. Would those work better?

I suspect this is an issue Asus might fix in a future BIOS update. Do they monitor this forum or is there a way I can submit this issue to them directly?

Thanks for any advice.

I think I found the solution!

In the BIOS, under Tweaker's Paradise, setting "Monitoring Software reboot Workaround" to Enabled seems to have fixed the problem. I can reboot without worry.

I'm back to using all 4 memory sticks (4x32GB). Although this new 0706 BIOS doesn't like my prior EXPO settings. I have to have EXPO turned off. The memory is running at 3600MHz.

Thank you kind sir, I hated this happening and hopefully now it'll be solved!

Hi I have 2x G.Skill  Trident Z5 Royal Nero 48 (2 x 24GB) kits. attached are my timings. My system in inconsistent. I'm running 0706 Bios with no GPU. I can run my system no problem for hours. I could restart my computer and shortly later my system will freeze. Theres been a few times where suddenly the fans rev up and then my computer shuts down and my Ryujin displays red with a CPU temp between 91-99 degrees. it's weird that since I went into the bios and told it to limit my system for 70 degrees this hasn't been an issue. Any thoughts? New Bitmap image.jpg

Sometimes a system will seem to be working but will have occasional freezing or stability issues.

The best way to rule out a problem with the RAM or RAM config is to use MemTest86.

I use the Pro version but the free version is fine. Download it and follow the instructions to make a bootable USB.

With the 0706 BIOS I couldn't complete a successful MemTest86 test with EXPO enabled. With EXPO disabled, MemTest86 had no errors. It's running my RAM in "Auto" mode, which defaults to 3600MHz.

I'll wait for a 4 stick EXPO kit on the QVL before trying to push my RAM speed again.

I found 99 percent of reboot OD and other querky re-boot issues are resolved by using HDMI instead of Displayport... I would prefer displayport but I have been in the BIOS a lot and only reliable way to access is with HDMI... So I left it plugged in that way... I must have rebooted 50 times or more since and not a single Qcode "OD" error or other weirdness with the Crosshair 870E/RTX 4080 Super & ROG XG279Q monitor 😅

When I was experiencing my reboot problems, I was using HDMI.

But my issue has gone away completely since I found the BIOS setting tweak mentioned above.

Hey guys. Today i decided to return MB and Memory at the store .

I change all the board adn Memory and make sure everything is install perfect and after all

the problem is still there.

Maybe its the cpu maybe it's tha garbage bios of asus.

i can start the system whit the retry switch then it's ok i can play my game.

I hope asus will fix it soon .

hi crash_ice, I had a lot of issues and OD was once of them. Infact, I thought most of my problem was memory related (Especially since my Dark hero had memory issues). It's just a matter of working them out one by one. First make sure you have the 0706 bios and that your clear it. Keep and leave standard memory settings alone. Make sure Monitoring Software reboot Workaround is enabled as well as memory context restore. Also make sure your monitor cable is securely connected on both ends. And most important make sure your drivers all installed. If you still have the x870 Hero, including ASUS LEGO IT8857GX V105 firmware Update tool and ASMx424X_FWUpdateV40013_u424241022200011AcmAPDV5. just make sure your using standard stable memory settings during your journey. Playing with the memory while troubleshooting will distract you from solving your real issues. Once you have resolved all your issues you can play with them memory. I'm running4 sticks 96gb memory at DDR5-6800 and I have 16gbs allocated for graphics. BTW, if you're using your IGFX graphics instead of a discrete you want to change the GPU clock frequency in the bios from auto to 2200mhz. My system restarted tonight. my phone was plugged into the front USB I/O (the Super-Fast charging port) and it was acting funning. maybe my cord is going bad or maybe the USB needs a new driver of firmware update.  I was having issues with USB communications

Hello robjs76 .

I try all the thing you wrote on your post and it's not working .

then i wil wait for new bios release cause it seems not doing anything when i try to fix it.

Thanks to you
