Hello, just installed my new Asus X870E-E Strix motherboard, loving it so far. When I initially got in to Windows, all of my drives were present (even the new one that wasn't formatted yet was showing in Disk Management) - I updated everything in terms of latest drivers for the motherboard etc, rebooted and enabled EXPO on my RAM, set to 6000MHz with voltages set, didn't touch any other settings...
And now one of my M.2 drives is not showing up in BIOS or in Windows? I've tried changing the BIOS setting for Bifurcation to GPU+M.2 mode, that doesn't help. Any suggestions as to what else I can try? I have a feeling it's related to the whole thing of the GPU slot & the M.2-2 & M.2-3 sharing bandwidth, but the drive that's in one of them is showing up while the other is not now.
I'm going to try disabling EXPO & see if that helps for some reason... wouldn't make any sense if that was it, but perhaps the BIOS version I'm on is messing something up.

I'll be going through RMA with mine soon enough, just... really not looking forward to having to revert to the GIgabyte board if Asus is unwilling to send out the new board first, which seems unlikely... that's one thing I miss the most about eVGA, Advanced RMA, while it cost money (on purchase) was freakin' AMAZING, having them send you a new motherboard/GPU before you have to send the messed up one back was so nice.

I think my replacement Strix 870e-e has fixed the problems with the GPU lanes being stuck at 2.0 on random boots. Expo works and the drives are visible. Maybe people with this problem should get a replacement board if they can even though it’s a big hassle. It’s the only thing that fixed my issues.

So I've messed around with this quite a bit. I have a X870E Hero and my OS drive is on M2_4 (chipset). It goes missing anytime I reboot or don't start from a cold boot. This presents itself by my computer going straight into BIOS. However, it seems if I turn off memory context restore and force a full memory train every boot it does not happen. I think there may be some bug pertaining to the initialization of these drives and memory training. It may just be a coincidence but I have reboot 20 times in a row and haven't had the issue since I've turned it off (for a week now).

In the 4th slot huh? The only issues I've had with drives not showing up in the chipset m.2 drive slots was one that had issues with pressure (on all heatsinks/slotd I tried) causing it to not show up. That drive is now dead, as far as I can tell - luckily I backed it up to one of my bigger drives because I was going to stop using it completely anyway because it's an older double-sided 2TB Team Force drive, and I've had it several years now... But I'm pretty sure it likely being dead has to do with the copper paper thing it had on it shorting something out because of all the remounts.
But, I would try putting the drive in any other slot, if you haven't already, just to check.
Just looked at the manual for the Hero & I'm remembering why I didn't buy it. Using m.2-2 & 3 at the same time on that board no only lowers the gpu slot to x8, it disables the 2nd pci-e x16 slot completely. That makes it unusable for me. I don't get why Asus did all this weirdness with the different layouts on their X870E boards.
At least with the Strix you can run all 5 m.2 slots, plus an x4 card, and your gpu at x8. That's actually not possible on the Hero, at all - that is of course assuming you get a Strix that doesn't have the disappearing slots problem several of us do/did in this thread lol

I will try changing slots. This issue does seem to exist on boards from different makers as well. There are Reddit and forum posts about this for Asrock and MSI. I think this is a problem with the platform itself and maybe remedied by an AGESA update. If anyone facing this issue could try disabling Memory Context Restore (MCR), report back if it changes anything.

x870e strix here, similar issue
was working for about 3 weeks i got a new heatsink i installed it on the first m.2 slot and and and the drive disappeared so i switched with my other m.2 did not work as well tried several times and it worked for about 2 weeks and it disappeared again i moved it to the third m.2 slot and working like since then for a couple of days.
do you guys think a bios update might fix this issue? im on 0706

I've been hoping that's the case for a while now in terms of a BIOS update fixing it, but we've had several people in this thread & elsewhere say that RMAing their board & getting another one that didn't have the issue was the best course of action.
You could have a drive like one of mine was/is that has issues with the pressure involved with certain M.2 heatsink installs, the drive would randomly not show up or just not show up at all if the heatsink was on too tight or something else was going on. This also happened with the STOCK motherboard heatsinks, when I put thicker thermal pads on it when I was testing different slots for it to see which cooler worked the best for that particular drive, it disappeared, when I changed the thermal pads back it came back.
The big issue with this board is, with the M.2 drives disappearing, especially in M.2-2 & M.2-3, randomly disappearing, you can't even tell if it's a drive issue, a mounting pressure/squish issue, or if it's the motherboard being dumb & not seeing the drive that boot up.
I just started having an issue where my monitor randomly doesn't want to display anything even once I'm in Windows (I can tell I'm in windows because the CPU temperature is being displayed on the motherboard LED thing, and once it idles in the 37-39C range I know it's in Windows for a bit) - not sure if that's the GPU being funky, or the cord, or the monitor (pretty sure it's the cord) - but the reason I bring that up is: I booted up when I got home from work, no display, got in to Windows finally after shutting it off & switching cables, M.2-3 was gone AGAIN. Shut down to unplug the cable I'm pretty sure is the problem completely, booted back up, M.2-3 was back. I changed nothing, only went in to BIOS to see if the drive was present.
Currently I'm running NO ECLK OC or any OC of any kind on the CPU, not even PBO, but I have my RAM at 6000MHz CL30 with tightened timings, 2000MHz FCLK at 1.2v, and the drives are showing up almost all the time, the boot up this afternoon was the first time the M.2-3 drive has disappeared since I setup the current settings.

Having the exact same issue; m2_3 disappering after enabling EXPO, also had m2_2 disappear once. Tried changing the m2_3 to Gen3, still not showing up. Will disable EXPO next to see if that helps. Hoping this would be fixed in a future BIOS update as there's not many motherboards supporting five m2 drives. Thanks for all the info here as now i know what might cause this & have a temporal fix at least while waiting on this to be fixed on ASUS side, if ever.

Now having disabled EXPO it first seemed to work ok but today on the first boot the m2_3 was gone. Booted again and it showed up. Quite random 🤔
