Hi everyone!
Brand new to the community here - I've bounced around different ASUS and Gigabyte boards for decades, and I've recently ran into a really odd issue that has me completely scratching my head.
I'm working on a typical small PC build - It uses a Lian-Li O11 Mini Air enclosure. Previously, it had an Gigabyte Aorus Z790 Master in it with an i9-13000k in it, and it was good for a few years. A few days ago, I pulled the trigger on an ROG Strix x870E-E Gaming WiFi with an AMD processor. It was an easy swap, and I was off installing Windows 11 in no time.
After doing all the obligatory updates as well as installing the newest drivers from AMD/ASUS, all seemed great! Except one thing... I noticed that there was a single device that the machine did not recognize:
I spent a bit of time trying to figure which device it was; basically unplugging all my USB devices, but couldn't figure it out. Finally, I isolated it to the front panel module on the Lian-Li case (in particular, the USB-E connector that is connected to the USB-C port). When I plug in the end of the cable to the motherboard, this "Unknown USB Device" shows up". When I unplug it, it goes away. Now is where it gets weird:
So I noticed when I plug something (any USB-C device) into the front panel, that "Unknown USB Device" actually goes away. The devices connected to it work fine. A flash drive pops up File Explorer and I can transfer files. However, as soon as I remove the flash drive, the "Unknown USB Device" returns. The OS's sound also indicates a device being unplugged and another being connected. It's just odd. This didn't happen when the Intel board was in, so I'm guessing that it has more to do with the board than the case/wiring.
Anyhow, I suppose it's no biggie - I probably won't lose too much sleep over it, but it's just really, really weird.
If you peeps have any thoughts on this, would love to hear it!
Cheers,
F.
