Can't use more than one stick of DDR5 on X870E

Dmo
Level 8

Can someone, please help? I have a brand new build and I BIOS freezes after about 10-20 seconds after posting. If I insert more than one stick of RAM. First I got CORSAIR Vengeance DDR5 RAM 64GB (2x32GB) 6000MHz. It failed to work even after setting it to 3200MHz. In only worked with one memory stick.

Then, I got DDR 5 CL30 6000 MHz CORSAIR DOMINATOR 64GB that is mentioned as supported. However, I am in exactly the same spot: I can only make it work with 1 stick of RAM. BIOS Freezes after 10-20 seconds. Windows crashes with a BSOD. What is going on? Any advice?

No problem 🙂 .

The timings are loose/stock, so shouldn't be an issue.

No need to manually set VDDIO as [Auto] is matching to VDD & VDDQ.

I like manually setting a lot of the voltages so if tweaking a setting it doesn't change an Auto value unnecessarily. You could do this when start tweaking things.

VSOC on [Auto] is high IMO. I'd manually set that to 1.05V. Only increase if running in to issues, don't think you'll need more than 1.1V.

VDDP on [Auto] is high IMO. I'd manually set that as 0.9V or 0.95V. Same as SOC, only increase if run into issues, shouldn't need more than 1.0V IMO.

Set UCLK DIV1 MODE [UCLK=MEMCLK], you'll find it in the DRAM Timings section. This will get the memory controller frequency matching the memory frequency.

If system is POST'ing correctly after these changes. Run stability tests to see all is well. 6000MHz is AMD "sweet spot" but officially is OC.

Memory Context Restore [Auto] should default to enable, seems to do that on 2 of the ASUS X670E boards I have (TUF/Hero). Perhaps as early release time for X870E it isn't as X670E yet. Perhaps with tweaks to voltages highlighted in this post will allow easier training, as too much voltage can do this.

Try pulling and reseating CPU and cooler, do not over tighten cooler,.. only tighten cooler snug then go back a smidge.

OK, I will reseat the CPU. I was super careful when seating it the first time, but I can try again. I don't know how to tell if I overtiggtened the cooler, but I went about 85-90 of tightness. I didn't tighten it to the maximum. But I will give it a try to see if that helps.

Hi @Braegnok. Thank you for the suggestion to reseat the CPU. I have some progress:
- The BIOS does not freeze any longer. Good news! I noticed that the BIOS settings were all reset to defaults. Not sure how it happened, but I am glad I can start from scratch anyways.

- I was able to plug in the ram into A1 and B1 slots and set the EXPO profile with 6000 MHz

However, there is still an annoying issue that's happening during a restart: the RAM LED is glowing during a restart, then, after about 10-30 seconds, the red CPU LED glows, then the white VGA LED and finally the green BOOT LED.

I assume that means that there is still an issue with the two sticks. This is no happening when only one stick is used. The restart takes around 3 minutes instead of the normal 52 seconds.

Does anyone have any other advice? Why does the supported RAM might have issues with the EXPO profile when using 2 sticks of 32 GB instead of one? I see lots of people only have a similar issue and the only solutions I saw is to significantly reduce the frequency or buy another RAM. I still have my previous sent of 4 sticks (4x32 GB) and using any 2 of them causes exactly the same issue.

Update:

- I was able to hunt down the source of the BIOS freezing: It turned out to be the setting called Memory Context. I enabled it to speed up the rebooting. When Memory Context is set to auto now, the BIOS does not freeze and I don't get the BSOD in Windows on the startup. However, the DRAM phase during the POST takes about 25-35 seconds. It seems very slow. For comparison, my 6 years-old PC takes 70 seconds to restart and the new beastly built takes over 3 minutes with the "Memory context" set to Auto. Is it normal? Does POST really need to spend half a minute during the DRAM phase?

- So, two sticks of 32 GB seem to work now.

Use RAM slots A2 and B2, see manual. There is a technical reason for using those slots.

Attach your BIOS settings to a post. In BIOS go to section Tool, option ASUS User Profiles, then Load/Save from/to USB Drive, using CTRL+F2 will save settings as a txt to USB stick.

Make sure setting DRAM VDD = DRAM VDDQ = VDDIO. You'll probably need between 1.3V to 1.4V. VDDP needs to be about 0.9V to 0.95V.

CPU VDDIO / MC Voltage [Auto] change to 1.4.

VDDP Voltage Control [Auto] check what [Auto] is in Ryzen Master, you'll need at least 0.9V to 0.95V IMO.

Your timings seem fine, as your using stock. If you share a screenshot of ZenTimings can check others which [Auto] in settings you shared.

Intel Defector  AMD Rebel

Thank you for looking at it, @gupsterg .

I can change CPU VDDIO / MC Voltage to 1.4, but it seems it's already 1.4, according to ZenTimings. Do you still want to change it?
