I'm looking to build a new PC desktop for work and it needs to be able to drive the new Samsung 57" Odyssey Neo G9 monitor at a resolution of 7680x2160@60Hz . The monitor is capable of 240Hz at this resolution, but 60Hz is fine for software development.
I am NOT a gamer.
I want to build the system so that I don't need a graphics card, meaning the CPU and motherboard must be capable of 8K@60Hz.
I will probably be using the AMD Ryzen 7 8700G CPU as the integrated graphics is capable of the required 8K resolution, however, I'm really struggling to find a motherboard to support this.
AMD recommended the ASUS ROG STRIX X670E-E GAMING WIFI motherboard and on paper it looks okay, if not a little old and expensive, as it is documented to support "max. 8K@60Hz via DisplayPort 1.4". However, ASUS don't stock this and I can't find any in the UK, so I started looking at newer motherboards, such as the ASUS ROG STRIX X870E-E GAMING WIFI. It has a great spec., far more than I need, it is available in the UK and with a cheaper price than the X670E-E, however, as is usual with many motherboard suppliers, technical details on the ASUS website are rather limited. It doesn't specifically state this motherboard supports 8K and I suspect, because it has 2 x USB4 ports with Type C display output, if 8K is supported by these ports, it is likely to be only 8K@30Hz.
Looking at the more budget friendly ROG STRIX B650E-E GAMING WIFI, like the X870E-E, this also specifically states it supports 8K@60Hz via DisplayPort 1.4.
So, what's going on here? Why does the newer, all bells and whistles X870E-E, appear to have "worse" or "no" support for 8K integated graphics? Is this because the assumption that anyone paying for this motherboard is likely to also install an expensive GPU?
I email customersupport@asusstore.co.uk to ask about availability and the above questions but haven't received a reply. I've also tried calling a number of times but I'm simply cut off. It would appear that ASUS don't actually want to sell me anything anyway!
I'm a firm believer that if it isn't possible to communicate with the sales department of a company, you can forget about them providing any decent level of support!
