X670E-A Gaming WiFi / Which NVME slots to use with M.2 PCIE 4.0 NVMe SSD?

Hello all!

I am new to the forum, and to Asus motherboard world as well. And I will soon receive a X670E-A Gaming WiFi motherboard 😀🎉 on which I will fit:

  • one AMD Ryzen 7950x3D
  • and two: WD_BLACK SN850X M.2 2280 PCIe Gen4 NVMe SSD

I read that some motherboards like X670E-E have connectors shared bandwidth (indicated in the X670E-E user manual page 12) which can reduce GPU card PCIe 5.0 x16 interface to x8 or x4 when we plug NVME M.2 in the M.2 PCIE 5.0 slots. I did not find such indication in the X670E-A user manual and I know my NVMe are PCIE 4.0 anyway.

However I would like to know what are the best slots for mounting these NVMe PCIE 4.0:

  • A) M.2_1 and M.2_2 PCIE 5.0 slots?
    i.e. is there any benefit of using these slots even if the NVMe are PCIE 4.0 only?
    i.e. by doing so, is there any risk of reducing the GPU PCIE 5.0 x16 to x8 or x4?
  • B) M.2_3 and M.2_4 PCIE 4.0 slots?
    i.e. is there any drawback or advantage when using M2 slots connected to chipset instead of CPU?

Hi there,

As per manual:

 

Both M.2_1 and M.2_2 utilise CPU lanes whilst _3 and _4 utilise the PCH. The 7950X3D has 24 CPU lanes, meaning you can utilise the M.2_1 without having to sacrifice lanes to the GPU.

However, it is worth noting that the performance deficit from either of these conditions (8x GPU or running NVME via the PCH) is very marginal.
