ROG x670e M2 bay heatsink

I have 2 Samsung 980 Pro SSDs WITH integrated heatsinks.  They obviously do not fit under the stock mobo heatsink covering the 3 M2 bays.  Any advice on removing the big stock mobo heatsink and letting the Samsung heatsinks do their job (I mean installing the SSDs with integrated heatsinks and NOT replacing the mobo heatsink).

Other option would be to carefully remove the SSD integrated heatsinks and install the "naked" SSDs.  But I am scared I'll destroy them in the process.

Does the stock mobo heatsink serve any other cooling purpose besides keeping any potential installed SSDs cool?  I'd rather not have to buy new SSDs if I don't have to but if the stock mobo heatsink must be in place then I guess that is my fallback if I destroy my existing SSDs while trying to remove their integrated heatsinks.

Thanks!
