Stay put. Especially if you're gaming. Single CCD still superior for this purpose.

I just made the upgrade to this.  I had a 7900X3D on the X670E-A Gaming WIFI and swapped to the 9950X3D over the weekend.  At 1440P I picked up about 10-15 FPS when paired with my 4080 Super.  On the content side, the 9950X3D is a beast running numerous apps, streaming, and Adobe like a snap.  A noticeable seat of the pants improvement.  The X670E in my opinion just great with the latest 9000 series X3D chips.  Nothing I am missing out from the X870, and the 850 and below are sure downgrades from X670E.

EDIT - I am using the latest BIOS (2904) and AMD chipset drivers (7.02.13.148).  With 6000 Gskill ram, after the first 1 minute memory training boot up, the system subsequently boots up in just seconds.  Super slick.  I can see under task manager that the chipset drivers appear to do a great job at core parking when gaming.

OUTSTANDING! Good news. I am considering waiting until I am in possession of the Astral I seek before a teardown and installation. One question about the BIOS flash. Did you go straight to V.2904 skipping 2704 and without the CPU installed and with ASUS BIOS EZ Flash? Thanks! Hank

I was on the old 1905 from February of 2024.  I never had issues so I did not flash it over the last year.  I performed a BIOS update directly to 2904 from 1905 while the 7900X3D was still installed.  I cleared the BIOS, flashed it, then made sure the system ran fine under 2904 with the 7900X3D.   I then swapped the CPU and it booted right up just fine.  After that I fresh installed Win 11 and the latest AMD chipset driver.  Everything went smoothly.

More checking and the computer is ready. BIOS 2704 already flashed so it's not an issue. 9950x3d will run on it. I was thinking I'd have to flash without the processor. All I need to do is install the newer AMD Chipset drivers still supporting the 9800x3d. Swap the proc. and done. Thanks, Hank

Yep.  You should be good.  With the latest chipset drivers a fresh install of the OS is not mandatory.  The chipset driver should recognize the new CPU and set up the windows scheduler and core parking just fine.

That said, AMD does recommend a fresh OS install.  I went through the hassle of a fresh OS to make sure I get the best core management of the multi CCD 9950X3D.  In addition, I had some older AMD chipset drivers that I was not sure were properly uninstalled when I changed to the newest chipset driver.

I recommend you bump to BIOS 2904 for the 9950X3D/9900X3D tweaks included in that over the 2704 (at least that is what ASUS says indicates on the X670E BIOS page).

Since the 9950 is supported with 2704, it's not necessary to flash to 2904 until after the swap. AMD doesn't require an uninstall. There were 2 updated drivers from AMD not in the ASUS drivers. I normally do uninstall but read the directions and not this upgrade. She's hot and fast as this make believe US Navy Hornet in DCS. Top of that radiator was 101 F whilst airborne, afterburners lit and climbing to the jetstream.

I did the same and just installed the latest AMD chipset driver.  Unfortunately, the process left behind remnants of the old drivers.  There were some registry entries, system folders, and even some programs left in "programs and features"  that were left behind after the latest chipset driver install.  That is why I did a fresh OS installation.

Certainly you can flash to the latest BIOS after you put the CPU in as 2704 supports it.  Before or after should not make a difference.  But you will want to get to 2904 eventually.  I definitely wanted to be on 2904 out of the gate for the fresh WIn 11 install.

Some people use Revo Uninstaller to remove the chipset drivers, related registry entries and leftover folders and files. It seems to work well. 🙂

There are only two updated file differences in Asus and AMD, the newer download. AMD doesn't require an Uninstal but I may reinstall Windows after I change to 9950X3D and 5090 but it's slow coming. How 'bout that Astarl y'all? help me
