NO BIOS on Displayport

TLDR: I can't get my BIOS to display when using DisplayPort, though HDMI works fine. The system boots into windows OK and then the DisplayPort connection works normally.

I have looked around for similar topics but haven't found a solution in them. Thanks in advance for any tips!

Description follows:

Hardware

  • Asus B650E-I mobo
  • MSI 4090 Suprim Liquid X GPU
  • Asus XG27UQR monitor
  • Ryzen 7950X3D CPU

Initially, to access the BIOS I had to use the CPU's integrated graphics (HDMI on through the MoBo). After turning off FastBoot the GPU's HDMI can be used to access the BIOS, but now I don't see anything on the MoBo HDMI (in bios or Windows, is this normal?). I am fairly certain the GPU's HDMI did not work either until I disabled FastBoot.

Things tried, failed:

  • I have tried each of the three DisplayPorts, all with two different DisplayPort cables.
  • Updated BIOS firmware to latest (1809)
  • I tried to Enable CSM, but I don't seem to be able to. I can change the setting to "Enabled" in the BIOS, but it returns to "Disabled" after reboot. Not sure what to make of this.
  • Checked that the GPU didn't need a firmware update

Ideas/things not tried

  • I haven't changed with the DisplayPort version in the BIOS or monitor. Both are set to 1.4 (default) I believe at present.
  • I don't have another monitor with DisplayPort input to try.

I found a fix.

CSM needed to be Enabled in order to see the BIOS over DisplayPort.  As mentioned above, it would not let me set CSM to Enabled and have it persist through reboot.  In order to enable CSM I first had to disable secure boot by going to the "Boot/SecureBoot" menu and changing the changing "OS Type" from "Windows UEFI Mode" to "Other".

After this the boot splash screen looks uglier (maybe the aspect ratio is off or resolultion isn't as high), but I can see it regardless of whether I am using HDMI or the DisplayPort outputs of the GPU.

For completeness, answers to your questions/suggestions below.

I wouldn't think the drivers which get installed under Windows would affect BIOS behavior but...

  • Yes monitor driver is installed for XG27UQR
  • nVidia driver is latest (537.58)
  • In boot yes, confirm it is "Windows boot manager"
  • The bios was reset to default when i updated its version (pretty sure). The only things I changed after this where "Fast Boot" to disabled and post delay to 5 seconds.

Thank you for the suggestion. Sorry I should have been more clear, I did check this. This is part of my bullet #4.The updater runs, black screen briefly, then reports status as 'Already Updated'

I'll edit my post to reflect this

Ok, so you already tried the Nvidia firmware update and it says you're already updated.

I have some questions.

1) Have you installed the monitor driver?

2) Have you updated the Nvidia driver?

3) In the bios on the Boot tab, does your first boot device show as "Windows Boot Manager"?

4) Have you tried resetting the bios to defaults?

5) Does device manager show any missing drivers?
