F9 and 0d Q-code seen with new RAM

Hi,

I'm currently running a ch7 Hero x470 (wi fi) with 16GB Corsair Vengeance RAM CMU16GX4M2C3200C16 :
https://www.corsair.com/uk/en/Memory-Size/vengeance-led-configurator/p/CMU16GX4M2C3200C16

I have both sticks running in slots A2/B2 as specified by the manual and they run without issue when using ASUS's version of XMP.

All the above is well and good until I decided to purchase some G-Skill F4-3200C14D-16GTZR for the tighter timings.

If i use RAM slot A2 with the new G skill memory ( either stick) then the system will lock up with the yellow LED lit up and the Q-code displaying 0d/F9. Does this mean the RAM is suspect?

The system will boot if I place the sticks in the other ( A1/B1) slots but even when leaving the timings on auto I could only get the G skill to boot at 2800MHz and no faster.

I tried upping various settings like the ram voltage (1.4v) SOC to 1.1v and ProcODT up to 60ohms but that was no help.

So in the end i popped the corsair stuff back in and away it runs with no issue at all so it's gotta be the G Skill at fault-Right?

Many thanks for any insight given.. 🙂

I should also mention i'm using Bios 1001, having tried both 0804 and 1101.

Not booting with the XMP profile on the memory is not a good sign. Do both sticks work the same in the one slot that works? If so, that would likely rule out one of the sticks being bad.

For a simple test, I would try setting the BIOS option to manual instead of XMP, set the RAM clock speed to 3200 manually and leave all of the timings set to Auto. Manually set the voltage to 1.360V for the RAM. See if it will boot that way. If not, then I would RMA the G.SKILL memory and try something else.

You may have missed this:

I did indeed set the speed manually but 2800MHz was the fastest i could get even after making the tweaks outlined above.

I'll give overclockers a ring and maybe get these sticks changed as they should work no problem..

No problem on private message, I've opted to reply here, I hope that is not an issue with you.

The G.Skill kit should work with no problems on this board. It has Samsung B die single rank/sided which is pretty much like catnip to Intel/Ryzen IMC.

It's strange RAM is working in A1/B1 but failing in A2/B2. To me it does not seem the CPU/board has an issue as when you use Corsair kit all is well.

There is only one other thing that comes to mind other than G.Skill kit being "fully faulty". You see the way RGB implementation is on the kit it has to enable writes to SPD, depending on if a old SW version of G.Skill RGB, AURA, etc was used SPD data could corrupt. Leading to erratic issues.

Prior to RMA I'd be tempted to see if Thaiphoon Burner picks up a CRC error on SPDs. If the G.Skill kit works again in A1/B1, you'll be able to check with TB.

Many thanks for your reply.

I did pop the G Skill into A1/B1 but no CRC errors when running TB.

My next move is to phone Overclockers tomorrow and hopefully get them swapped.

Thanks once again.. 🙂

NP 🙂 . OCuk should be sweet for RMA IMO. I've seen too many people use that kit with Ryzen to think it would be an issue TBH.

My first set of G.Skill RAM was faulty, swap out worked a treat for me on C6H, C7H and ZE. They were F4-3200C14D-16GTZ. I also have F4-3200C14Q-32GVK and F4-3200C14Q-32GTZSW , again no issues with all 3 boards. All my boards I've had since launch.

I have to admit I absolutely love the board.

This is my first build using an ASUS moBo as in the past I've always used Gigabyte.
Just a bit of information on my current build:
When I initially ordered the parts I ordered a Gigabyte Aorus Gaming 7 X470 along with this RAM:
https://www.overclockers.co.uk/team-group-dark-pro-8pack-edition-16gb-2x8gb-ddr4-pc4-25600c14-3200mh...

Anyway I eventually changed my mind re motherboard and bought the CH7 instead. I totally forgot about the RAM and whether it was compatible or on the QVL list.

So on building the Darkteam RAM did not seem happy in the CH7 although as it isn't on the QVL list I didn't really read too much into it and just assumed it was incompatible (it worked absolutely fine in a friends MSI X370 moBo)

Luckily I had the Corsair RAM from a previous build and as stated it worked as it should right from the get-go. Thats with xmp or DOCP enabled at 3200MHz with 16/18/18/36 CR1 timings.

The G Skill stuff would have been the icing on the cake lol but I guess not. Hopefully I've just been unlucky and the set has a fault. I'll post back with any results and once again many thanks for your input, it's invaluable!

NP on what I maybe able to share on experience 🙂 .

Yes I have enjoyed my ASUS boards, besides HW/FW they have been glorious visually IMO.

Surprising the TeamGroup RAM did not work.

I reckon the Corsair kit is Samsung B die.

i) From how easily D.O.C.P / XMP worked.
ii) From some reviews I've seen in the past.

Check label, if it has v4.31 it will be Samsung RAM IC. Also with Thaiphoon Burner you will see RAM IC info. If it is Samsung B die, I'd probably not bother with the G.Skill set TBH. Check and perhaps you can get tweaking right away 😉 .

I tried these settings with the Corsair stuff but it wasn't happy.

The sticks look like Samsung B die? Perhaps you can see where i'm going wrong?

The DRAM calculator can work great for some and not so for some. I do not use profiles from it TBH, by this I mean nothing derogatory to the author and people who helped created it.

How I OC is by sorta getting a feel for how xyz combo of HW is reacting from my own tinkering, so I may not be able to say do x to the profile from DRAM calculator and it will work.

I would aim for your own timings or use The Stilt presets within Extreme Tweaker > DRAM Timing Control > Memory Presets .

Take a look at the timings section in OP here, link. It has been kept down to bare minimum. If you are happy to:-

i) get familiar with DRAM Timings control section of UEFI.

ii) invest some time tinkering.

I am happy to share further how I would go about tweaking your RAM.
