Crosshair VI Wifi, fan control / sensors are broken

Hello.
I'm using c6h wifi motherboard with 3700x CPU and currently experiencing a lot of problems with fan control / sensors on recent bios versions. I did expect some problems when i was building this system (bleeding edge bios, etc), but i never thought there will be so much issues with such a basic functionality as temperature control.

I have 1 CPU fan and 3 PWM case fans (Noctua A14/A12). #1 and #2 case fans should change RPM depending on CPU temperature, and #3 depends on PCH temperature. Basically it works fine for some time (usually 2-10 hours), but then the expected behavior breaks in many different ways:

1. This is the most common issue i'm experiencing right now. Usually fans should spin around 800-900 RPM when the system is in idle state. When this problem happens, RPM decreases to 400-500 and the more i load my CPU the less RPM i get until fans completely stop. And it happens to all CPU-related fans. This is so ridiculous i even made the video — https://streamable.com/i3379 where you can see the idle behavior (~400 rpm) and what happens when i load my CPU using 'stress' utility. I've tried different fan profiles (silent, standard, etc), different low speed, delays and nothing changed. I've checked and can confirm that fans are really stopping, so it's not just monitor tool issue. The fix is to reboot the system.

2. Motherboard temperature sensors just stop working and hang up on the last value it was, even though RPM sensors still work. Once more, it's not the monitoring tool related problem because fans aren't changing the speed if i load my CPU. For instance, if CPU temperature hangs up on ~50C temperature, fans will still have ~800 RPM even if i stress my CPU (usually in this case RPM should increase up to 1500). The fix is to reboot the system.

3. Fan is just completely ignoring the component's temperature. I had this issue on my fan #3, which wasn't changing idle RPM even though my PCH temperature was already around 80. The fix is to reboot the system.

4. Fan gets stuck at 100% RPM. This usually happens on my fan #3 when i cold boot my system. Rebooting the system didn't help me though, i had to clear CMOS (or make some changings in the bios) to fix this.

So basically my system is barely usable right now, i have to constantly monitor the sensors and regularly reboot my system when something breaks again. Otherwise this behavior can possible damage my CPU/motherboard due to overheat in high-load scenarios. As far as i can see, other people are experiencing pretty much similar fan-related problems i do, so it's not just defect motherboard i have.

I've been using ASUS motherboards for 17 years starting from P4PE and you can imagine how disappointed i am right now. In my opinion this kind of issues are critical and should be investigate ASAP. I hope my report can be useful, and this situation won't end with changing motherboard to another vendor.

hi*Shamino, can you post test bios also for my mobo?*regular crosshair vi hero (non wifi)
I have the same problem with the fans that suddenly stop working, also at the boot the fan of my Nvidia rtx 2080 start at 100% then return to normal after 4-5 seconds,*on overclock.net forum many users have same bug
thank you*

ill wait for him to report back

Hello I took the freedom to test too, because I was having the same problem, apparently improved a little, but there is still a lot of temperature fluctuation, I noticed that is giving a drop in the speed of the fans, even though I put everything in full, I kept it in my The processor over 4.4ghz, with vcore 1.4v, is stable, then I will test memory clock, was not having much success above 3600mhz.

Obs1:

I did some more tests, in memory, with this bios I could use with 3800mhz 1: 1, infinity fabric with 1900mhz, after almost 5 minutes got error in memtest with the pc shutting down, before I could not even pass 3600mhz. I think it's on the way! Congratulations!

I don't know if it's enough to make a conclusion, but after 18 hours of uptime fans are still working as intended. Usually i had problems much quicker and at least once a day had to reboot my system. I'll continue to monitor and test (since this is the only bios i can use at the moment), but everything's looking great so far.
Thanks.

hi can you try this version to see if issue disappears?

let me know whether yes or no

Just flashed it, i'll report if something goes wrong again.
Thanks for your help!

remember you should update your 3rd party tools to latest versions as well , hwinfo, aida, cpuz etc

Hi @Shamino,

Thanks for posting these. I'll check the new C7H WiFi UEFI as I'm experiencing fan issues on UEFI 2606.

For example the other day I started a run of 3DMark Time Spy late in the evening and decided to check out the results in the morning. The benchmark score was OK but in the CPU test the max CPU temperature reported was 83°C which seemed bad. I opened HWiNFO to check the readings and the ASUS WMI temperature reading was stuck, while the CPU temperature reading was working. Then I ran CB20 and I've verified that the CPU fan RPM was hovering around 800-900 and not going up although the CPU temperature has risen.

In another instance while I was assembling and testing my configuration (16-17 August) using UEFI 2501 or 2606 (I don't remember exactly) and doing benchmarking I've observed all fans (CPU + case) stopping and the CPU hitting 95°C.

P.S.: These are my current UEFI settings. Are they OK for testing?

Thanks!

Hey Shamino, I posted a more detailed Response to you over on the OCN Forums (here: https://www.overclock.net/forum/28105376-post42823.html ) But I know you check this Forum more often, so Figured I would give you a short Synopsis over here, and let you know that I have applied your UEFI to my Crosshair VII Hero Non Wifi (and am about to apply the Beta UEFI to my Crosshair VI Hero Non Wifi right now) and wanted to let you know that I have been up and running for a little more than 48 hours on it, and it definitely seems to have fixed the issue!

Before I couldn't get to an uptime of 6 Hours without the fans cutting out, it was literally an every day problem for me, often multiple times in the same day. I do run HWinfo64, and I know because that accesses the WMI, that this can accelerate the issue. Anyways, I have made no changes in my habits, I still am starting HWinfo64 with my system, and I have now made it a full 2 days worth of Uptime without having that issue pop up. I will post again about it in a week if there is a change, but for now I am pretty sure whatever changes you made in the UEFI have fixed the issue!

Thank You! And I hope this gets incorporated into the official UEFI's Moving Forward! Thank You for all your help!

Also, as a side note, if there is ANY possible way for you to give us an option to over ride the Critical CPU Temp in the Fan Control in UEFI, that would be absolutely AMAZING!!! There are so many of us who want to over ride the 75c Critical Temp, so our fans don't go to 100 Percent once our Temp hits 75c, without having to install AISuite (which is just not Possible In Linux), and it would be SO AMAZING if you can just give us a toggle in UEFI to do this, even if we have to agree to special terms doing so. That would just be so awesome!

Anyways, thank you as always!
