It's now two months since the updated BIOS was made available for the ROG CROSSHAIR VIII HERO. Can anyone with Asus confirm if the B550-E/F/XE/I is still supported?

That's pretty disconcerting. I was thinking of buying a B550-I and, based on you comment, I looked up the last BIOS update for that motherboard:

No update since August. I checked on the other motherboard I was thinking about (X570-I) and it's in the same situation. Hard to believe they've abandoned those motherboards already. I guess I won't be buying one.

A new beta BIOS has appeared today with AGESA 1.2.0.6 (meaning Asus skipped 1.2.0.4 and 1.2.0.5 which introduced some major changed to voltage behaviour).

If you do go for a board in the Asus B550 range, avoid the motherboards with Intel 2.5 gbps NICs (I225-V) as it's faulty and both Intel and Asus refuse to fix it (despite three hardware revisions from Intel). If you use wireless, don't care about the NIC, or are happy to buy an external one (a 1gpbs NIC is only about £15), the B550-I is a decent mini ITX board. If you have the space, I'd go for the -XE, -E have, or -F models.
