Asus Rog Strix X570 & NVMe overheating

Hi everyone

I have a Samsung 970 Evo Plus on the first NVMe slot, on my Asus X570 motherboard.

the location is a bit cramped, with the Dark Rock Pro CPU Cooler above it, and a massive RTX 2080 below it.
Case is Phanteks Eclipse P600S.

It always overheated from the beginning, rarely going below 58°C in idle in Samsung Magician, and often going above 60°C.

You might think this is a normal temperature for NVMe but it often triggered sudden reboots.
I bought Thermal Grizzly Minus 8 pads to replace stock pads recently and it didn't help much.

I added a Noctua 60mm fan in front of it, loose, sitting on top of the GPU, between the cooler and the exhaust fan, perpendicular to both.

I tried both sides, meaning the fan was either blowing air on the NVMe heatsink or pulling air from it. Things improved initially, with temps dipping below 50°C for the first time.
Now it's back between 55° and 58°C, but no longer above and never triggered a reboot since then.

My question is: how can I have a permanent solution?

A PCIe card wouldn't help: first slot is too close to the GPU, second slot is too close to the PSU, riser+vertical is too close to the glass panel, so neither would provide enough airflow I guess. And to top it off, it'd drop the GPU to 8x PCIe instead of 16x as they'd have to share the lanes.

I doubt newer models (Samsung 990) would overheat less... can anyone suggest a better solution?

Would it be possible to remove the stock heatsink to install something else like a Thermal Grizzly or Be Quiet! NVMe heatsink? Would it even help?

Hi enios, try to follow this thread:

Samsing SSD 970 EVO Plus Running Hot - Samsung Community

Reboot is not normal, even at that temperatures. I would look further into it or RMA the drive.

btw my brand new 990 PRO 2Tb hits 40°C idle on my X570-E Gaming on the first NVMe slot w mb stock heatsink

Hi The_Brain, thanks a lot for your reply

a drive RMA would be annoying, my PC would be out of commission for a while, but I guess I should do it while it's still under warranty

The 990 2TB would have been my upgrade option (or a WD Black SN850X 4TB if prices drop further)
I suppose you also have a big GPU and a massive CPU heatsink above it?

Ryzen 5800X + Deepcool AS500Plus as heatsink + EVGA GTX 1060 6Gb (the single fan)

Not bulky as your config but enough to bury my ssd deep down the bottom.

After the whole morning the 990 Pro idle's at 45°C atm.
For comparison my other WD BLACK SN850 1Tb is at 50°C on second slot (...doing nothing at all)

thank you, your config is not a lot better than mine in terms of bulkiness, so it sounds like my drive may have a problem

btw, may I ask what the idle temp for your GPU is?

I bought a high-end (at the time) variation of the RTX 2080 from EVGA that has excellent cooling, so the fans are often not running at idle as the heatsink is good enough.

However, yesterday I set the fans to 40% minimum, they're barely audible and this dropped the GPU idle temp from ~50°C (I think) to ~35°C.

This made a difference on the NVMe: temp dropped steadily from 55°C to 50°C and less, and since yesterday it didn't go above 50°C.

As a side-note, I found another thread with a similar issue, that person had 2 NVMe drives from 2 different brands (neither is Samsung) and whichever one was on the first slot also triggered a random reboot around 62°C

>This made a difference on the NVMe: temp dropped steadily from 55°C to 50°C and less, and since yesterday it didn't go above 50°C.

Hi Enios. Woah...that's an HUGE difference!
Mine idle's at 45°C approx so also my GPU fan is often stopped.

That said, if I were in your shoes I would drastically increase the air circulation inside the pc case.

Inside my NZXT H510 which is relatively small, I have two 140 mm fans on the front pushing fresh air and another 120 + 140 mm in the rear and upper case to avoid any kind of overtemperature related problem and to keep them as quite as possible for most of the time.

I am not sure I need to RMA the drive after all, since other people have the exact same issue with random reboots with other brands.

Temps fell to the low 40s now, and never went above 49°C.

I wouldn't know how to improve thermals other than running the fans faster/louder.

I have 3 intake fans in the front, two fans on top (front one intake, back one exhaust) , one exhaust fan in the back, all Noctua.

I removed the top and front panels from my Phanteks P600S case, making it a mesh case.

I even added a 60mm fan which I am now pointing on the GPU heatsink right under the NVMe, and two more 60mm to improve airflow/temps for the chipset and 2nd NVMe, under the GPU.

The GPU and massive CPU heatsink don't leave a lot of room for air to flow around the upper NVMe.

If you have any suggestion, I am happy to hear it.

Perhaps moving the GPU to a lower slot, if that slot can be 16x (unclear from the motherboard's user manual)

Nice, the air flow seems more than adequate.

In your case the other possible solution is move the your ssd to the second NVMe slot (if there's any) or to find a drive with better thermal specs.

I wouldn't recommend moving the GPU anywhere else than the first slot because you would lose x16 native support.

This is the operating scheme for my X570-E Gaming (easily the same as yours) :

* PCIex16_2 shares bandwidth with PCIex16_3

actually the two fans on top may both be exhaust, I need to double-check. Perhaps the front fan on top is useless and messing with the front intake fans

2nd slot is already populated, unfortunately, with a WD Black that likely runs warmer than the Samsung if placed in slot 1.

I remember this table, but does it really mean that a single card placed in the 2nd slot will only run x8? The table seems to be for a dual and triple card setups.

I guess it's ok now, the higher noise level barely bothers me, and the drive seems to have settled around 46°C. Even the chipset is now 60°C.
I could potentially get a pair of 120mm Noctua NF-A12x15 PWM, they are only 15mm thick and would fit between the CPU heatsink and the GPU, to make sure no hot air rises from the GPU. But maybe it's not necessary if the 3 GPU fans are already at 50% and pulling air from the GPU heatsink.

It's a bit annoying to run into such issues when you invest in expensive high-end components 😕
